Three dimensionality on a surface

Modelling in Cinema4D. The purpose of this test is to test if 3D-modelling can be used to create convincing illusions in the actual physical space continuing into a flat surface, like the floor here.

Test 1 - Cinema 4D view (with the virtual projector placed in relation of the physical projector. The model is in 1:1 scale)

Observations:

  1. The illusion is the most convincing when viewed from the direction of the projector
  2. With movement the illusion is still lost when viewed from the opposite side of the projector, but the movement still makes the picture make more sense than without movement (the objects projected still move behind each other in the right way, but the picture seems distorted; without movement the picture is more abstract, just a surface pattern)

Test 2 - Changing the virtual projectors place

When the virtual projector was moved above the content, the spatiality of the projection was lost, resulting in a more general texture for the surface. The projection is no longer in relation to the space around it. The three dimensionality creates a world of it’s own into the space, and seems like a hole into another world and other laws of physics. The picture becomes more like a movie, in that we understand that it represents a three dimensional space, but is removed from our own reality of three dimensional space.
